I think that what sci-hub does goes beyond 'just' academia. I have a master＊s degree in social sciences and now I work outside of academia.
Even if I don't work as an academic, the "unfiltered" output of science is important to me, not only whats conveyed through media or such things.
If I want to explain a topic or answer a question, I want to see what expert scientists think on the topic.
For example, as a hobby I sometimes write blog posts about humour in different times and places of human society for a broader audience. A topic that helps to create bonds between cultures and people.
Without Sci-Hub I can't access the experts work on this topic. And whats academic work even for, if not to educate humanity as a whole?
