Abstract
Healthcare ethics consultants are professionals who provide healthcare ethics consultation services. Healthcare ethics consultation can be divided into clinical ethics consultation (defined in chapter 1) and other ethics-related work (discussed in chapter 4). This third edition of the Core Competencies for Healthcare Ethics Consultants (Core Competencies) builds on the prior two editions, adding advances in the field of healthcare ethics consultation since publication of the second edition. As in the first two editions, this edition focuses primarily on clinical ethics consultation. Chapter 1 describes the nature and goals of clinical ethics consultation broadly. Chapter 2 presents the core competencies necessary for providing quality clinical ethics consultation. Chapter 3 focuses on service-level standards for ethics consultation services, including important policies, procedures, and quality measures. The second edition included brief discussions of other functions of healthcare ethics consultants (e.g., non-case consultation) and ethical dimensions of healthcare ethics consultation as an emerging professional practice. These sections have been expanded in the current edition due to significant advances in these areas and are presented in chapters 4 and 5.
