Summary:The process conditions for synthesizing ethylene glycol p-hydroxybenzoate monoester using p-toluenesulfonic acid as a catalyst and p-hydroxybenzoic acid and ethylene glycol as raw materials were investigated under microwave irradiation. The structure of the product was characterized by infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The effects of microwave irradiation power, catalyst dosage, acid-to-alcohol molar ratio, and microwave irradiation time on the esterification rate were examined. The results showed that the optimized conditions for synthesizing ethylene glycol p-hydroxybenzoate monoester were: microwave irradiation power of 500 W, acid-to-alcohol molar ratio of 1:3.5, catalyst dosage of 0.28 g, and microwave irradiation time of 20 min. Under these conditions, the esterification rate reached 92.1%.
