Ethnicity: the African experience.AbstractThis article reports that special conditions prevailing in plural societies of sub-Saharan Africa during and after the colonial era, have made social scientists increasingly aware of complexities of ethnic relations. As yet, analytical arsenal to deal with ethnic relations on a comparative, world-wide basis is deficient, but it is the beginning to disentangle main elements of the problem. Last few years have witnessed a number of attempts to deal with ethnicity, universally and comparatively. In addition, there have been a number of monographs published on specific plural societies in Africa, America and various Caribbean and Indian Ocean islands. The understanding of ethnicity in Africa and other colonial and postcolonial societies has until recently been obscured by four main trends in the tradition of Western social science. Anthropologists who have done the bulk of the research in the colonial world have traditionally taken the culturally homogeneous group as their unit of analysis. They have been more interested in describing the social structure of groups than interrelations between groups.
