Abstract / Summary
This study evaluates how adding southern yellow pine-based biochar alters soil structure and hydro-physical properties in sandy-textured soil. Utilizing X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) scans on undisturbed soil cores, the authors tracked macropore variations at doses of 0, 7.5, 15, and 30 Mg per hectare. The findings reveal a dual mechanism: at lower application rates, biochar particles tend to occupy and block existing soil macropores (an "occupying effect"), whereas increasing the dose beyond 30 Mg per hectare begins expanding the soil*s overall porous phase due to the biochar's inherent internal porosity.
